Posted October 01, 2018 16:04:06 South Korean tourists in Australia say they’re experiencing a “tourism crisis” amid concerns about the government’s travel restrictions and the number of people allowed into the country.
In a report released by the Australian Tourism Council (ATC), 38 per cent of visitors to the country last year said they would travel if it was easier to do so.
The survey, which covered 2,500 tourists, found that over the past 12 months, tourists from Australia have fallen by almost a quarter to 28 per cent.
“As an individual tourist, I’ve seen many people coming and going, but I think a lot of it is related to the government trying to keep a lid on things, trying to limit people,” said Kang Jin, from Korea, who is visiting Australia this week for a five-day holiday.
Kang said she and her boyfriend were visiting Australia with a group of friends when they decided to stay in South Korea for two weeks. “
But we have also had to be very careful, and make sure we’ve got the right visa, because people are coming and getting into our country and getting out again.”

“We decided to come to Australia, and we were thinking about going back to Korea, and it was a pretty safe choice,” she said.
“And I think we’re feeling very safe in Korea now, so that’s a good thing.”
And if you’re going to be here, it’s really good to have a family in Australia.
“They’re all from Australia, it is a good time to be out of the country,” she told ABC Radio Melbourne. “
“It’s a great place to visit, it has a good reputation. “

“If it was easy to get into South Korea, I wouldn’t be going.” “
‘There’s so many things to see’ Kang said the government had failed to provide adequate information about the visa rules and visa applications. “

‘There’s so many things to see’ Kang said the government had failed to provide adequate information about the visa rules and visa applications.
“There’s too much information about people coming from all over the world coming in, coming in from South Korea and other countries, and just wanting to come here, and being allowed in, and not having to apply,” she added.
“So it’s a bit frustrating.”
AUSTRALIAN TOURIST STRUGGLE The ATC report said there were more than 500,000 people applying for visas each year to travel to Australia.
“More than 50 per cent are coming from countries with very restrictive travel regimes,” the report said.
Mr Turnbull has said the visa system will allow Australia to attract “the best and brightest”.
“I don’t want to be complacent, I want to stay ahead of the curve,” he told the ABC.
“People come here because they love Australia, they love the culture and they love our people, they don’t come here to do anything else.”
Mr Turnbull says the Government will introduce a new visa system in 2018 that will allow more people to enter Australia, but the ATC survey found a significant number of Australians who are already here were not planning to change their visa arrangements.
“A lot of people are just not sure what they want in terms of their future visa applications, and I think that’s one of the reasons why it’s such a difficult situation for people,” Mr Turnbull said.
